Looking ahead to the next 20 years

It has been 20 years since the first Theatre in Bergen, Norway – and what a journey it’s been! Over the past two decades, what began as a collection of individuals has become a close-knit community, bound together by a shared experience.

I started The Performance Theatre with a simple idea – that achieving a growth model that works for both the present and future will take a different kind of leadership, inspired by thought-provoking conversations and critical debate.

I am proud to say that since 2000, the Theatre has provided a safe space for these conversations all over the world – from New Delhi, Oslo, St Petersburg and London, to Beijing, Istanbul, Lisbon, Venice and Seattle. In the last five years alone, we have brought together over 900 leaders from around the world and have established a deeply curious, forward-leaning and committed community.

This exceptional community has taught me that we can unlock enormous opportunities by leading with courage and compassion. The work carried out by our leaders, and the extraordinary initiatives – both local and global – led by the outstanding people that have been recognised at the Inspired Leadership Awards have all made this very clear.

But we’re far from done.

Alongside huge progress we have also experienced deep struggles. We cannot deny the substantial transformations occurring in our societies. News headlines from around the world are telling the same story – that people are disillusioned with the status quo, public dissent and social unrest are on the rise, and there is an increasing imbalance between humans and the natural world.

What is the role of leadership in these challenging times? How do we create spaces that can invite sustainable and inclusive change? The need for that safe space for conversations and debates has never been more urgent. There is tremendous power and true hope when outstanding people come together to focus on the biggest challenges to our common future.

As we reach the end of the second decade of The Performance Theatre, it is time to think about the journey that lies ahead, and how we can use this moment as a launchpad for our vision and plan for our next chapter. This year marks the beginning of a big new chapter for us. And as we move towards that milestone, we as a team resolve to keep learning, keep listening and keep improving the way we deliver this wonderful experience to you all for the next 20 years!
